Eligibility For TSA PreCheck

Applicants must meet all TSA PreCheck requirements before they may enroll in this trusted traveler program, as expedited security screening is only available to qualifying low-risk passengers. Completing TSA paperwork, submitting all required identification and citizenship documents, and undergoing an in-person interview and background check are the steps for determining whether an applicant is eligible for the PreCheck program. As part of the TSA PreCheck qualifications, for instance, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPRs) or U.S. nationals. Additionally, applicants must provide the following as part of their background check:

  • Their full names as they appear on their proof of identification and citizenship or immigration documents.
  • Any previous names or aliases.
  • Their fingerprints.
  • Payment for the application fee.

Moreover, TSA PreCheck requirements do not include minimum age restrictions. A traveler may enroll in TSA PreCheck at any age, as long as he or she meets citizenship, residency and background check requirements. However, a traveler who is younger than 12 years of age may accompany a parent or legal guardian through a TSA PreCheck lane if the parent or guardian is an eligible member of the program.

Moreover, customers may visit a TSA PreCheck enrollment center to apply for the program in person if they cannot complete an online application. However, the walk-in application process will take longer, especially if applicants do not schedule an appointment beforehand.

When applying in person, customers must bring their identification, citizenship documents and payment for the non-refundable enrollment fee. When paying the fee, applicants may pay with a credit card, certified or company check, or by money order. Enrollment offices do not accept cash or personal checks as payment.

TSA PreCheck eligibility is determined after travelers complete an application, submit their supporting documentation and undergo a background check and in-person interview. As part of the enrollment process, applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Proof of citizenship, such as a U.S. passport or a driver's license and birth certificate.
  • A current U.S. government-issued photo ID.

For assistance in determining which documents to submit, applicants may use the Determine Citizenship tool under the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) website. To use the tool, applicants must provide their city and country of birth and their country of citizenship. If applicable, travelers must also provide their state or province of birth.

Note When completing TSA paperwork for PreCheck enrollment, the applicant's name must match his or her identification and citizenship documents. Additionally, the same name must be used to book future airline reservations.

If applicants do not meet TSA PreCheck qualifications and requirements, they will not be eligible for enrollment in this program. For instance, applicants who are not U.S. citizens, nationals or LPRs cannot enroll in the PreCheck program.

Additionally, applicants who do not pass the background check will not be eligible for program enrollment. Generally, permanent disqualifying offenses include criminal infractions such:

  • Espionage
  • Sedition
  • Treason
  • Federal crimes of terrorism

As part of the TSA PreCheck requirements, interim disqualifying offenses may include:

  • Extortion
  • Identity fraud
  • Bribery
  • Assault
  • Robbery
  • Voluntary manslaughter
  • Aggravated sexual abuse
  • Arson

If applicants commit one of these criminal offenses within seven years of applying for TSA PreCheck, they will not qualify for program enrollment. Moreover, applicants will not meet TSA pre check rules if they were released from prison within five years of enrolling in the program.

Additionally, other TSA PreCheck disqualifications may pertain to those who are wanted under indictment or warrant for any of the felonies listed above. Once the indictment is dismissed or the warrant is released, applicants may qualify for PreCheck enrollment if they meet other eligibility requirements. However, the TSA may deny PreCheck applications for other reasons as well.

In addition to committing these disqualifying offenses, applicants may not qualify for program enrollment if they provide false or incomplete information when completing the PreCheck application process or if they have previously violated TSA regulations.

Certain groups automatically meet TSA PreCheck qualifications and eligibility requirements. These groups include DoD federal civilian employees and members of the U.S. Armed Forces. While members of the Armed Forces are automatically enrolled in the program, DoD civilians must opt in by logging into their milConnect accounts and completing the opt-in process.

After opting in, DoD civilians will be enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program, and they will not need to opt in again. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, however, do not need to opt in, as they are automatically enrolled in the program.

As part of the TSA PreCheck rules, members of the Armed Forces and DoD civilians may use their program benefits for personal travel, and they do not need to be in uniform to participate. When reserving a flight, however, passengers must provide their DoD ID number in lieu of their known traveler number (KTN). This DoD ID number can be found on the backside of common access cards.

After booking the flight reservation and providing a DoD ID number, proof of TSA PreCheck eligibility will be printed directly onto the boarding pass.

As another TSA PreCheck qualification, members of Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI are automatically eligible for participation in this trusted traveler program. To use these TSA PreCheck benefits, travelers must provide their membership number (or PASS ID) in lieu of a KTN when booking their flights.

Travelers must complete all TSA paperwork and obtain a KTN in order to obtain PreCheck benefits and expedited security screening. While travelers with disabilities may enroll in the PreCheck program if they meet eligibility requirements, their disability or medical condition will not automatically qualify them for these benefits.

Travelers with medical conditions or disabilities cannot use the TSA PreCheck lane unless they are qualifying members of the program. For assistance in completing an application, travelers with disabilities may contact the TSA by telephone to make accommodations.
